The hymn book

In September 2011, Singing the Faith became the first complete and balanced successor to Hymns and Psalms, published by the The British Methodist Conference in 1983.

With over 800 hymns, psalms and liturgical responses, the book reflects the way in which worship has evolved for British Methodists over the 28 intervening years – as well as offering brand new words and music that hint at what is still to come. Editor-in-Chief Peter Brophy and the Revd Barbara Bircumshaw (Chair of the Music Resource Group) reflect here on their experience of putting together a hymn book suitable for a wide range of modern needs and tastes.

Singing the Faith was seven years in the making. You can read the story here and download a PowerPoint presentation, Get to know Singing the Faith (revised Feb. 2012) with an accompanying Presentation handout (revised Feb. 2012).

As new impressions of the book are printed, corrections will be incorporated, though the publishers are unable to replace earlier purchases. In September 2012, we produced an updated list of corrections in a revised format. All the corrections listed have been incorporated into the Singing the Faith organ edition.

Singing the Faith Plus is designed to complement and support the printed hymn book. It is testimony to the ongoing creativity of hymn writers – and the continuing need to re-express contemporary faith and issues in new forms of words.

Supported by a varied group of experienced worship leaders, Singing the Faith Plus is the ideal place to begin planning your Sunday worship – as a worship leader, a musician or a preacher. We offer a comprehensive search engine for every hymn in Singing the Faith, linking them to lectionary readings and other helpful resources.
